Zanzibar vs. Mainland Tanzania: Which Should You Visit First?

Both are unforgettable, and if you have the time, doing both on one trip is common and easy to arrange. But if you’re choosing where to start, here’s how they compare.

Zanzibar: Beaches, History, and Slower Days

Zanzibar is about white-sand beaches, warm turquoise water, and the winding streets of Stone Town with its Swahili, Arab, Persian, and colonial history layered into one UNESCO World Heritage old town. It’s where you go to unwind — snorkeling and diving on the reef, spice tours through clove and nutmeg plantations, sunset dhow cruises, and genuinely excellent seafood. It’s also a easy add-on after a safari: many travelers fly from the northern safari circuit straight into Zanzibar for a few beach days to close out the trip.

Mainland Tanzania: Safari Country

The mainland is where you go for wildlife — the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara make up one of the most complete safari circuits in Africa, all within a few hours of each other. This is the trip for people who want game drives, dramatic landscapes, and (if timed right) the wildebeest migration. It’s a more active, scheduled kind of travel compared to Zanzibar’s pace.

Doing Both

Most of our clients don’t actually have to choose — a typical itinerary runs 4-6 days of safari on the mainland followed by 3-5 days unwinding in Zanzibar, connected by a short 45-60 minute domestic flight. It’s one of the easiest “two trips in one” combinations anywhere in Africa.
