Choosing when to go on safari is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning a trip to Tanzania — it shapes what you’ll see, how much you’ll pay, and how many other vehicles you’ll be sharing the view with. Here’s a month-by-month breakdown to help you decide.
June to October: The Dry Season
This is peak safari season, and for good reason. Vegetation thins out, water sources shrink, and animals gather around the remaining rivers and waterholes, making game viewing easier and more predictable. If you want to see the dramatic Serengeti migration river crossings, July through September is the window — herds of wildebeest and zebra crossing the Mara and Grumeti rivers, with predators waiting. Expect clear skies, cooler mornings and evenings, and the highest prices and busiest camps of the year.
November to May: The Green Season
Rain transforms the landscape — the plains turn lush and green, birdlife explodes (this is the best time for birdwatching, with migratory species arriving from Europe and Asia), and newborn wildebeest and zebra calves appear on the southern Serengeti plains around February and March. Accommodation prices drop significantly and parks are far less crowded. The trade-off is less predictable game viewing in thicker vegetation and the chance of afternoon downpours, though rain rarely lasts all day.
