Ethiopia

Ethiopia is the historic heart of the Horn of Africa and one of the few African nations never colonised, giving it a proudly distinct culture all its own. Its capital, Addis Ababa, sits at over 2,300m above sea level and serves as the continent’s diplomatic capital, hosting the African Union headquarters, alongside being the primary hub of Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest carrier. Beyond the capital, travellers come for the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, the dramatic escarpments of the Simien Mountains, the Danakil Depression’s otherworldly volcanic landscapes, and the ancient obelisks of Axum. Ethiopian cuisine centres on injera, a spongy sourdough flatbread served with richly spiced stews (wat), and the country is the birthplace of coffee, with elaborate traditional coffee ceremonies still central to daily life and hospitality.
